How does lifestyle medicine differ from general practice?
Medicare’s funding structure makes it challenging for GPs to provide the intensive support patients often need to achieve lasting remission or health optimisation. As a result, traditional general practice is typically more reactive and focused on diagnosing and managing specific symptoms or conditions within a limited timeframe.

Lifestyle Medicine adopts a more proactive, preventative and behaviour-focused approach to healthcare with an emphasis on targeted lifestyle changes to prevent, manage, and in some cases even reverse chronic health conditions. Instead of treating symptoms, a Lifestyle Medicine doctor looks deeply at the underlying causes – factors such as nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and connection – to improve your long-term health.

Do I still need my regular GP?

Yes – and that’s encouraged.
This service is designed to complement your regular GP, not replace them. Your GP remains an important part of your care for:

  • Acute or urgent medical issues
  • Ongoing general medical care
  • Care coordination when needed
Are consultations delivered in-person or via telehealth?

Consultations are available both in-person and via telehealth. Under current Medicare requirements, telehealth rebates are only available for patients who have attended at least one in-person consultation with Dr Roex within the past 12 months. Patients who do not meet these requirements, including interstate patients, are still very welcome to book telehealth appointments, though these consultations are not eligible for Medicare rebates.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is required – you are welcome to book directly. Where relevant, we can collaborate with your GP or other healthcare providers to ensure your care is well coordinated.

Is Lifestyle Medicine only for people with a health condition?

No. Many patients attend to prevent disease, improve energy, optimise health or address risk factors early.

Will you prescribe medication?

While the primary focus is on lifestyle interventions, medications may be prescribed as an adjunct, when clinically indicated.

Is Lifestyle Medicine safe?

Yes. Addressing the underlying causes of disease and chronic conditions is more effective than only using medication to manage the symptoms. When guided appropriately, lifestyle medicine is a safe and low-risk approach that can often help reduce reliance on medications and surgeries and their associated risks.

Is Lifestyle Medicine the same as Alternative Medicine?

No. Lifestyle Medicine is firmly grounded in rigorous, peer-reviewed research and works alongside conventional medicine rather than replacing it.
